How I Got Started - Chet Brzezinski 1979

About My Very First Bike

Hello there, my name is Chet Brzezinski. Let me tell you a bit about myself. The picture you see on this page was taken in Detroit, Michigan back on March 28, 1979. It was my 8th birthday and I got to spend it with my Grandfather. For my birthday, he took me to Kmart (this proves my age… lol). He let me pick out my own bike. The one I picked out was so cool. It was impossible for it to get a flat tire. Of course, I just had to have a horn put on it. When I finally got to ride it outside for the first time I tried to find all the glass I could to ride through because I just knew there was no way it was going to get a flat tire.

Later on that day my Grandfather dropped me and my new ride off at my house. I didn’t even go outside. I just hopped on my bike and rode around showing it off to every kid in the neighborhood. Every day I would ride it from sunrise to sunset. Before long, the training wheels were off and I was riding down the street full speed.

Not Much Has Changed Today
Here I am almost 43 years later. Not much has changed when it comes to cycling. I average about 5,000 miles per year just from my summer time riding. Being an avid cyclist, all these years, has helped keep me in great shape and healthy. I think back and wonder if cycling would be such a big part in my life if I didn’t get to go to Kmart with my Grandpa that day.

There Are No Rules About Slowing Down
Just because a person reaches a certain age (50 seems to be the magic “you are old!” number) it doesn’t mean they have to slow down or stop altogether. I say don’t mind what other people try to tell you what you shouldn’t be doing anymore. Keep doing what you want. I know I love cycling and I will never give it up until the day comes when I can no longer get on a bike.

You don’t stop cycling when you get old,
You get old when you stop cycling…
